Traveler's Tales, Adventure, Ideas & Resources,
and musings from The Traveler... The adventure awaits... May 2006 * 05/26/2006 |
Welcome to the May issue of The Traveler We'd like to start this issue off with an apology. For what, you ask? Well, you may remember last month's opening comments when we spoke of certain parts of Hawaii receiving enough rain to "drown a horse". Of course, we said this not out of any antipathy toward horses, but just an attempt to demonstrate that there was really a lot of rain coming down. Nonetheless, a poor choice of words on our part. And some loyal readers let us know about it. So there are two things to take away from this experience: On to this month's issue. Our feature articles for May offer a nostalgic and whimsical look at the French Riviera; then back to the states for a fist-hand account of New Orleans on the road to recovery; finishing with a quick study of that jerk we've all seen before as we've settled into coach for another oh-so-comfy airplane ride... Our last feature article is actually an excerpt from this issue's Travel Writing Pick-of-the-Month. A very engaging (and just a little racy) account of a man in search of a fantasy, and eventually coming face to face with himself. Calling all travel writers! (and those that just have a good story to tell). Make sure that you check out our featured sponsor this month. TravelAndTransistions.com is offering a travel writing contest with some great travel prizes. Get all the details about this exciting opportunity below. With Memorial Day upon us here in the states, marking the unofficial start of summer, we've got plenty of travel resources, ideas, and bargains to help you with your summer travel planning. Enjoy! Let's not forget, this Memorial Day weekend, all those that have sacrificed in defense of the principals, ideals, and freedoms the rest of us enjoy and take for granted in America. Freedom isn't easy, and when it does become easy, we are all in danger of losing it. Stay engaged and informed. Have an opinion and express it. Remain vigilant, but strive to live not in fear, but in tolerance. That's what those we remember this weekend sacrificed their lives for, and it is what we owe them now.

Travel Writing Pick-Of-The-Month This isn't your typical travelogue. Dennis Jon's true life account of two weeks spent in Thailand take us through the culture and landscape of the country, including its famed nightlife. An unflinching account of a journey unfolding in real time, Jon takes us on a trip that dances on the line between fantasy and reality, and in the end forces him to finally face what he is running from: himself. A review copy was provided from the author, and the book is now only available from a Thai-based publisher. Insightful, entertaining, and a bit provocative.
