This month we focus on a very important segment of the travel and tourism industry, one that has rapidly gained popularity the past fifteen or twenty years... Ecotourism. It is an important time for ecotourism, 2002 is designated as the International Year of Ecotourism. It is a time when standards and practices are being reviewed for all that calls itself “ecotourism”. The future of responsible travel will be shaped by decisions that are made today. Much of the success of ecotourism is shaped by the consumer perception of what exactly it means to be an “ecotourist”. As well, it is important to realize that much of what the travel industry dubs as ecotourism is such in name only. Many tour operators and travel service providers attempt to capitalize on the term without following the concept in practice... This month The Traveler will attempt to sort this out for the concerned tourist. We’ll provide information and resources to discover what exactly responsible ecotourism is, as defined by the International Ecotourism society; we'll also provide plenty of resources to help you find the perfect eco-adventure! “But wait”, you may ask... “I just want to take the family to Ohio to see Grandma!” Well, don’t despair. As always, The Traveler has resources for airfare, hotel, and car rentals at bargain prices. And you can always find a great weekend getaway on our getaway page at TouristTravel.com We hope you find our special Ecotourism issue enlightening and entertaining! First, let’s take a look at how the The Traveler got his feet wet as an ecotourist a couple years back when he visited the Asa Wright Bird Sanctuary and Nature Center on the island of Trinidad in the West Indies...
